More than 50 Pueblan artisans received training in modern and sustainable lead-free pottery techniques during the Pottery Knowledge Communities Meet-Up.

San Bartolo Cohuecan will host a transformative event aimed at strengthening artisanal production and eliminating the use of lead in pottery.

Pure Earth Mexico, the Ministry of Culture of Puebla, and Australian Aid held the “Pottery Knowledge Communities Meet-Up” on July 18 and 19, 2024, in the municipality of San Bartolo, Cohuecan, Puebla.

The primary goal of the event was to encourage artisans to implement innovation and design modules in the production process of lead-free pottery. Additionally, training continued in the preparation and application of lead-free glazes. Over 50 artisans from various communities in Puebla, such as San Marcos Acteopan, San Bartolo Cohuecan, San Felipe Cuapexco, Santa María Atzitzintla, Izúcar de Matamoros, and San Andrés Ahuatelco, as well as from Tlayacapan, Morelos, participated in this enriching gathering.

For several years, Pure Earth has been working hand in hand with these communities to support and train potters in the production of lead-free pottery, promoting sustainable and safe practices for the health of artisans and their consumers.

During the event, crucial topics for the modernization and improvement of artisanal production were addressed, such as:

  • Innovation and new designs
  • Firing lead-free pottery
  • Access to new markets and buyers
  • Photography skills for catalog creation

These training modules aim to support potters in their innovation and improvement processes, providing them with tools to enhance the positioning and sale of their products in the craft market, both in Mexico and abroad. Additionally, the production of innovative pieces with new designs, primarily lead-free, is encouraged.

This meeting, developed with financial support from the Australian Embassy and the accompaniment of the Ministry of Culture of Puebla, underscores the importance of conducting such an internationally significant event for the benefit of the pottery communities in the PEM program. The collaboration between these institutions not only demonstrates a joint commitment to preserving artisanal traditions but also to improving the quality of life for local artisans and public health in Mexico.
