Russia – Water filtration for Pyra and Gavrilovka villages
As part of developing a strategy to address extensive contamination in the industrial city of Dzerzhinsk, Pure Earth funded a water filtration system in Pyra village and in Gavrilovka village, neighborhoods whose groundwater sources are heavily contaminated by wastes from the city’s chemical industry activities over the years. The systems were completed in Spring 2005, bringing safe water for village residents, the local hospital, and a school, as part of efforts to protect villages in the area. Pure Earth also supported the establishment of a steering committee led by a local NGO in cooperation with the Nizhniy Novgorod municipal government, to initiate a remediation plan for the affected area.
