Actions for Lead Reduction
Blood Lead Monitoring
- Blood lead measurements were conducted for potters in Morelos, Puebla, and the State of Mexico to assess their exposure to lead from traditional lead-based glazes.
- Blood lead measurements were also carried out for sugarcane laborers in the state of Morelos, identifying potential sources of exposure in their work and community environments.
Training and Transition to Lead-Free Glazes
- Workshops were provided to potters on the use of lead-free glazes, promoting safer ceramic production techniques.
- Training in design and product development was offered to encourage innovation and competitiveness in the market.
Infrastructure and Kiln Modernization
- Five upgraded kilns were built, improving energy efficiency, reducing pollutant emissions, and ensuring the proper vitrification of lead-free glazes.
Events and Knowledge Exchange
- A volunteer event was held, bringing together community efforts to promote safe pottery practices.
- The First Potter-to-Potter Encounter was organized, where artisans from across the country exchanged knowledge, experiences, and best practices for producing lead-free ceramics.
Institutional Partnerships
- The signing of a collaboration agreement between the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts (FONART)and the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) was promoted, strengthening joint efforts to reduce lead exposure in pottery and protect the health of artisans.
