Russia – Gorniak Mine Tailings

Gorniak was the center of the ore mining industry in the Altai region. Copper, zinc and lead were extracted and processed in the Loktevsky District but mining is now uneconomical and has ceased. Discussions with the city government identified some cost-effective actions to reduce the impacts of toxic dust from tailings storages but major problems remain with subsidence under the urban area and flooding.
