United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Pollution
Solving pollution is critical to advancing 11 of the 17 SDGs
Tackling pollution contributes to achieving the UN SDGs, including indicators directly and indirectly affected by a clean environment.
A target of particular relevance to pollution includes 3.9.2: Mortality from environmental pollution: Reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination.
In addition to improving health in countries around the world (SDG 3), pollution control will improve access to clean water and improve sanitation (SDG 6), promote sustainable economic growth (SDG 8, 9, 12, 17), build sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and protect land and water (SDG 2, 14, 15). Efforts to control pollution will be strengthened by global initiatives to slow the pace of climate change principally by transitioning to a sustainable, circular economy that relies on non-polluting renewable energy (SDG 2, 14, 15).
