India – Chinhat Lindane Manufacturing Industries

The toxic insecticide Lindane is banned and severely restricted in over 50 countries but is still produced in India, China, Romania and possibly Russia. Lindane production is an exceptionally dirty process, creating 9-12 tons of contaminated waste for every ton of lindane produced. Blacksmith worked with local NGO partners and technical specialists to located various illegal dumps of production waste and to test methods for accelerating biodegredation of the waste.
